Good teachers will do everything within their means to overcome barriers to learning. There's solid research on the success of washing machine programs in improving school attendance. God bless the donor.

Does this article come across as heartless? Yes. Clearly there are ways of managing a laundry service. A blanket no could deny poor and homeless children clean clothing, a barrier to school attendance.

It is schools' role to help students learn. Sometimes this involves meeting basic needs so that everyone can have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Laundering clothing is a life skill, even a potential employment skill. Those washing machines could have a valuable place in schools. Their donation should be accepted.
